After graduation passed one year in Europe, two years in the Graduate Department of Harvard University, three years as Tutor of Greek at Harvard; one year of study for the degree of A.M., which he received in 1882; one year in Europe; two years as Instructor in English at Harvard; five years as Assistant Professor of English; from June, 1890 to 1904, was Professor of English at Harvard, and from 1891 to 1902 Dean of Harvard College. In 1900 received the degree of LL.D. from Harvard College. In 1902 became Dean of Faculty of Arts and Sciences; in 1903 President of Radcliffe College; and in 1904 Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory in Harvard University. He has published "Original Charades," "School, College, and Character," and" Routine and Ideals," and in 1903 delivered the Phi Beta Kappa poem at Harvard.
